Betrayal

A demon walked into a small village one Fall night.
It was the night of celebration for the villagers; the night they celebrated the deity that protected their village from evil spirits.
They lit lanterns, gathered flowers, prepared the shrines, and merrily ate.
As the demon walked towards the entrance gate, the guards called forth reinforcements at the sight of her.
They threw rocks, yelling at her, calling her a monster. They formed a mob and threw torches, swinging at her with pitch forks.
One rock thrown by a child hit its mark, and she stumbled to the ground.
She slowly rose to her feet, bruised, covered in mud, and slowly limped out of the village perimeters.
"It couldn't be helped, with me looking this way.
 It is to me that these people pray.
 I protect them from monsters and demons throughout each season.
 But I'm not beautiful.
 I don't have the image of the graceful maiden that they paint on their murals.
 My skin is pale, my lips and horns stained red from fighting for them.
 The children throw stones at me, quivering in fear.
 All because, I look like a monster."
